Sailing Construction means building boat repair kits and hull parts at a shipwrights’ workbench, which gives Construction experience rather than Sailing experience, and needs only the novice quest Pandemonium. It runs from level 1 to level 92, tops out at 475 experience per action, and is the only Construction training that produces a tradeable item at the end of it.

The catch is in the ratio. A plank is worth roughly half as much experience here as the same plank is worth in player-owned house furniture, and on 7 September 2026 prices the resale value of the finished item did not make up the difference.

What Sailing actually added to Construction

Sailing released on 19 November 2025 and brought three things Construction players care about.

A new build site. The shipwrights’ workbench sits at sixteen ports and has its own two recipe menus, Craft-hull-parts and Craft-repair-kits, which were given right-click options on 11 March 2026.

Three new plank tiers. Camphor, ironwood and rosewood planks sit above mahogany and are made from their own logs at the sawmill for 2,500, 5,000 and 7,500 coins respectively.

A second use for planks that is not furniture. Everything you build at a workbench is a tradeable item, so part of the spend comes back when you sell it. That is the whole argument for the method.

Construction experience from the workbench was halved by hotfix on release day, on 19 November 2025. Any guide quoting pre-release numbers is quoting figures that lasted a few hours.

Requirements

RequirementDetail
QuestPandemonium (novice, no skill or quest requirements)
Construction level1 for wooden, up to 92 for rosewood
Sailing levelNone for the workbench, only for reaching certain ports
ToolsHammer and saw, except wooden repair kits
MembershipRequired

Pandemonium is the Sailing tutorial quest. It gives 1 quest point, 400 Sailing experience, a raft and a spyglass, and takes most players well under half an hour.

The crystal saw works at the workbench, which means every level requirement below can be reached three levels early. It also works on core boat parts without consuming a charge. The Construction boosts guide covers the stacking rules.

Where to build

Sailing levels do not gate the workbench, they gate the port. The distance from the port’s bank to the workbench is what decides your rate.

PortSailing to accessTiles from bank
Red Rock52 (plus The Red Reef)2
Deepfin Point674
Port Khazard305
Corsair Cove111
Land’s End113
Catherby Bay114
Port Roberts5018

Red Rock is the shortest run in the game at two tiles, but it needs 52 Sailing and partial completion of The Red Reef. Port Khazard at five tiles is the best setup that does not need a mid-level Sailing account, and at 30 Sailing it is reachable early.

If you have neither, Corsair Cove at eleven tiles is the practical floor. Eleven tiles is roughly seven seconds of walking each way, which costs you real experience per hour but does not make the method unusable.

Repair kits: every tier

Repair kits heal a boat’s hitpoints. They are the more relaxed of the two recipes because the inventory lasts longer.

TierConstructionMaterialsKits madeXP per action
Wooden12 planks, 10 bronze nails, 5 swamp paste243.5
Oak192 oak planks, 10 iron nails, 5 swamp paste290
Teak302 teak planks, 10 steel nails, 5 swamp paste2135
Mahogany472 mahogany planks, 10 mithril nails, 5 swamp paste2210
Camphor662 camphor planks, 10 adamantite nails, 5 swamp paste2255
Ironwood801 ironwood plank, 10 rune nails, 5 swamp paste3300
Rosewood921 rosewood plank, 5 dragon nails, 5 swamp paste3330

Two things in that table catch people out.

Ironwood and rosewood use one plank, not two, and produce three kits, not two. They return more items than they consume, so you must leave inventory space free or the build is refused outright.

Wooden repair kits do not need the workbench. They are made by using the materials on each other in your inventory, anywhere in the game, with no hammer, no saw and no Pandemonium.

Every recipe takes 4 game ticks, or 2.4 seconds.

Hull parts: every tier

Hull parts are five planks each and are used to build or upgrade a skiff’s hull.

TierConstructionPlanksXP per actionXP per plank
Wooden15 planks72.514.5
Oak85 oak planks15030
Teak235 teak planks22545
Mahogany415 mahogany planks35070
Camphor535 camphor planks40080
Ironwood775 ironwood planks437.587.5
Rosewood845 rosewood planks47595

Compare that last column against ordinary furniture. An oak plank in a larder or a door returns 60 experience. An oak hull part returns 30. A teak plank in a garden bench returns 90, a teak hull part returns 45. The halving is exact and deliberate.

Large hull parts are not a training method

Large hull parts take five regular hull parts and give 2.5 Construction experience. That is not a typo and it is not a rate you can improve. They exist to build sloop hulls, which need 16 of each large part, or 400 planks per wood type.

Build them when you want a sloop. Never build them for experience.

You are paying half your experience per plank to get an item back and to stop clicking. Whether that is a good deal depends entirely on what the item sells for on the day.

What it costs at 7 September 2026 prices

This is the part every other guide skips, because the answer moves and because it is not flattering.

Net cost per experience below is materials bought at the insta-buy price minus the finished item sold at the insta-buy price. That is the same price basis the calculator’s Sync button uses.

For reference, on the same prices and the same day, an oak dungeon door costs 8.6 gp per experience, a teak garden bench 9.0 and a mounted mythical cape 6.6.

So the honest summary on 7 September 2026 is this. No workbench recipe beat the cheapest ordinary furniture method on cost per experience, and most were considerably worse. The only one close to competitive was the wooden repair kit at 6.6 gp per experience, which is a level 1 recipe returning 43.5 experience per action.

Rosewood kits are excluded from the table on purpose. The rosewood repair kit market is thin enough that the quoted price and the price you can actually trade at are different numbers, and the wiki carries the same warning on ironwood.

These are one day’s figures. Sailing item markets are less than a year old and move far more than plank prices do. Check the GE price tracker before committing gold to any of it.

XP per hour, and what changes it

The wiki’s ceiling figures assume roughly 1,200 repair kit actions or 1,000 hull part actions per hour without a plank sack, at Deepfin Point.

RecipeEfficient XP/hrWhat most players see
Oak repair kits (19)108,00070,000 to 95,000
Teak repair kits (30)162,000110,000 to 145,000
Mahogany repair kits (47)252,000170,000 to 225,000
Camphor repair kits (66)306,000200,000 to 275,000
Ironwood repair kits (80)360,000240,000 to 320,000
Mahogany hull parts (41)350,000240,000 to 315,000
Camphor hull parts (53)400,000270,000 to 360,000
Rosewood hull parts (84)475,000320,000 to 430,000

The efficient column is the ceiling, not a promise. The realistic column is what the same action count looks like once ordinary friction is included.

What moves you between them:

  • Bank distance. Two tiles at Red Rock against fourteen at Catherby Bay is the largest single factor, and it is a Sailing level problem, not a Construction one.
  • A plank sack. It holds 28 planks on top of your inventory and feeds the workbench automatically, which is a straight increase in actions per trip.
  • Amy’s saw and an Imcando hammer. Each saves an inventory slot, which is one more plank per trip.
  • The carpenter’s outfit. Its experience bonus was extended to the shipwrights’ workbench on 26 November 2025, so the full set adds 2.5 per cent here as well. It is a Mahogany Homes reward, covered in the Mahogany Homes guide.
  • Latency and click timing. A 4-tick recipe punishes a slow click far less than a 3-tick furniture loop does, which is why this method is forgiving.
  • Inventory overflow. With ironwood and rosewood kits, a full inventory stops the build. With a filled plank sack, finished kits drop to the floor.

Setup and inventory

  1. Complete Pandemonium if you have not already.
  2. Buy planks, the matching nail tier and swamp paste, in the ratio the recipe uses. Nails and paste are the quiet cost: a mahogany kit action needs 10 mithril nails and 5 swamp paste on top of the two planks.
  3. Bank at your chosen port. Port Khazard at 30 Sailing is the sensible default.
  4. Carry a hammer and saw, or Amy’s saw and an Imcando hammer to save two slots.
  5. Withdraw planks, nails and paste in whole multiples of the recipe.
  6. Use the workbench’s Craft-repair-kits or Craft-hull-parts right-click option to skip the top-level menu.
  7. Leave free slots if you are on ironwood or rosewood kits.
  8. Bank the output. Sell in batches rather than all at once; these are shallow markets.

There is no servant, no house, no building mode and no removal step. That is the appeal.

Worked examples

Actions are calculated as experience remaining divided by experience per action, rounded up.

66 to 80Camphor repair kits5,84311,686 camphor~28.1m gp

The mahogany repair kit run from 47 to 66 also needs 20,060 mithril nails and 10,030 swamp paste. Nails and paste are cheap per unit and substantial in bulk, and they are the line item people forget to price.

To recalculate any of this against your own experience rather than a clean level boundary, put your current XP and target into the OSRS Construction Calculator.

Where the new planks come from

Ironwood logs are unusually cheap relative to the finished plank because ironwood trees are common and the sawmill fee is not. That inverts the usual rule that making your own planks is cheaper, so check both before a bulk order.

A sawmill voucher doubles the plank output of a single conversion for the same fee, which changes the arithmetic entirely when you have them. Plank Make also works on all three new woods at 70 per cent of the sawmill fee, covered in the Plank Make comparison.

Should you use it

Use it if you want Construction levels while doing something close to idle, you are already sailing and banking at a port, or you want to build hulls anyway and would rather the experience was not wasted.

Skip it if experience per hour or gold per experience is what you are optimising. On 7 September 2026 prices, oak doors, teak benches and mounted mythical capes were all cheaper per experience and faster, and the GP per XP ranking puts every method on one table.

Watch it if you are patient. This is a young market, and a period where kits or hull parts trade above their plank cost would make this the only Construction method that does not simply burn gold. That has not happened on the days we have checked.

For the standard route through the skill, the 1-99 Construction training methods guide covers what to build at each level, and the house servants comparison covers the servant side that the workbench lets you skip entirely.

Level requirements, materials, experience per action and output quantities come from the OSRS Wiki recipe data for each repair kit and hull part, and from the Construction training page’s shipwrights’ workbench section. Port list and bank distances come from the Shipwrights’ Workbench page. The 19 November 2025 hotfix halving workbench experience and the 26 November 2025 change granting the carpenter’s outfit bonus at the workbench are recorded on the same pages. Experience thresholds use the standard RuneScape experience curve. Prices are Grand Exchange insta-buy values from the real-time prices API, checked on 7 September 2026.
