Level 83 gives you a fully equipped everyday house for about a fifth of the experience of a 99, level 91 adds the ornate jewellery box, and level 99 adds the Construction cape. Which one you should target depends on how much of your house you actually use, not on which number looks best on a hiscores page.
The three targets compared
| Level 83 | Level 91 | Level 99 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total experience | 2,673,114 | 5,902,831 | 13,034,431 |
| Share of a 99 | ~21% | ~45% | 100% |
| Experience from 77 | 1,197,533 | 4,427,250 | 11,558,850 |
| Headline unlock | Everything below 82 | Ornate jewellery box | Construction cape |
| Who it suits | Most accounts | Teleport-heavy accounts | Cape and completionist goals |
The experience column is the argument. Going from 83 to 91 costs more than reaching 83 in the first place. Going from 91 to 99 costs more than the entire skill up to 91.
What you have by level 83
Level 83 is a popular stopping point not because of one headline unlock but because of where it sits on the curve. By 83, the builds that a typical account uses daily are all available:
- Portal nexus, 72. A single object holding multiple teleport destinations, replacing individual portal rooms.
- Gilded altar, 75. The standard method for training Prayer with bones, when lit with incense burners.
- Spirit tree, 75 Construction and 83 Farming. A house-based spirit tree transport node.
- Achievement gallery, 80. The room that houses the jewellery box and trophy mounts.
- Basic jewellery box, 81. The first tier of the jewellery box, with unlimited-charge teleports.
Practically, an account at 83 has a working travel hub, a Prayer training altar and a jewellery box. That covers most of what a house is used for outside of Construction training itself.
What level 91 adds
The ornate jewellery box. Level 91, built in the achievement gallery. It is the top tier of the jewellery box, offering the widest set of destinations of the three tiers with unlimited charges.
The intermediate step is the fancy jewellery box at level 86. If your reason for pushing past 83 is teleports, 86 buys most of the improvement for less than half the experience of 91.
Two other builds sit in this band:
- Fairy ring, 85. A house-based fairy ring in the superior garden.
- Ornate rejuvenation pool, 90. The top pool tier in the superior garden.
Whether 91 earns its 3.2 million experience over 83 comes down to how often you teleport from your house. For an account doing daily slayer or bossing with heavy travel, it does. For an account that uses the house for an altar and little else, it does not.
What level 99 adds
The Construction cape. Unlimited free teleports to your house, and it acts as both a hammer and a saw so you never carry either again. It also permits building any hotspot regardless of the room you are standing in.
Those are real conveniences, particularly for an account that uses a portal nexus or gilded altar constantly. But the cost is stark: the jump from 91 to 99 is 7,131,600 experience, more than the whole skill up to level 91.
If the cape is the goal, that is a fine reason. If the goal is a better house, 91 already delivered it.
Boosted access versus base level
Construction has an unusually active boosting culture, and it matters when you are choosing a target.
Temporary boosts, a spicy stew or a crystal saw, depending on the build, can push you over a level requirement for a single build. Once the object is built it stays built, so a boosted build is permanent even though the level was not.
Two consequences follow:
- For one-off builds, a boost can save you levels of grinding. Plan the boost rather than the levels.
- For anything you will rebuild or upgrade repeatedly, the base level is the number that matters, because you cannot rely on holding a boost every time.
Always check the base requirement for the object you want before treating a boosted level as your real target.
Choosing your own target
The honest way to choose is to price all three and look at the numbers together.
- Calculate your route to level 83, the everyday-house target
- Check the cost of reaching level 91, the ornate jewellery box target
- Check the cost of reaching level 99. The cape target
Enter your current experience rather than your level, pick the method you actually intend to use, and set today’s plank prices. The gold and hours columns will usually make the decision for you.
Most players who plan a 99 revise the target once they see what the last eight levels cost. That is not a failure of ambition; it is the curve doing what it does.
Which method to reach your target
The target you pick changes which method makes sense.
For 83, the stretch from 77 to 83 is 1,197,533 experience. That is short enough that most players simply use whatever they were already building.
For 91 or 99, you are committing to millions of experience, and the cost-per-experience difference between methods compounds. This is where teak garden benches and oak doors become genuinely worth considering against mahogany.
The 1-99 Construction training methods guide covers the full route, and the GP per XP ranking shows what each method costs over a long grind.
Sources for this level target guide
Level requirements for the portal nexus, gilded altar, spirit tree, achievement gallery, jewellery boxes, fairy ring, rejuvenation pool and Construction cape come from the OSRS Wiki and are fixed game mechanics. Experience thresholds come from the standard RuneScape experience curve. This article contains no price-sensitive figures; the cost of reaching each target depends on your method and current plank prices, which is what the calculator is for.
